This is a personal song about loneliness and nostalgia. Each verse is a different girl from my teenage years, but I tried to paint broad strokes to make it relatable. Powerful memories both haunt and illuminate, reminding one of the good times when needed, but also contrasting with bad times as they occur. On rare occasions, I still play this song live. The recording doesn't do the song justice, but it is all I have right now.

I have a memory
a magic night when I was 13 years old
I stayed out late with you.

You were everything that I was not
but I wanted to be
just as wild and lost and free.

At midnight in the playground
discourse turned to something stronger
I could hear it in your voice.
At midnight on the playground
time is frozen there forever.

Spectres and phantoms of our lives,
they illuminate the darkness.

I have a memory
a hazy night when I was 14 years old
at the evening's end.

You moved in first before I could
I wanted to start,
but I had so much to learn.

At midnight on the dance floor
movements turned to something stronger
I could sense it in your step.
At midnight on the dance floor
time is frozen there forever.

Spectres and phantoms of our lives,
they illuminate the darkness.

I have a memory
a certain night when I was 16 years old
in the back of your car.

You knew everything that I did not
but I wanted to learn,
learn to shed away the child.

At midnight in your bedroom
embraces turned to something stronger.
I could feel it in your touch.
At midnight in your bedroom
time is frozen there forever.

Spectres and phantoms of our lives
In my room the candles burn.
I sit and I watch them burn.
For my memories they burn.
They illuminate the darkness
Illuminate the darkness
Illuminate the darkness
