Beneath the Dust
Unreleased 4 track demo recorded by Brian Wilson in Dan's basement.

I wrote this song last of my five Silent Bob songs and at the time thought it was the strongest. The song deals with estrangement and death. There isn't always a chance to reconnect. You won't get the chance to meet everyone again further down the road. When some doors are shut, they are shut forever.

The recordings don't really communicated the power of the song exactly how I wanted it, but I've never had the time to revisit it. I used the title of the song for an early "best of" compilation but did not put the song on it. We recorded a 4 track version of it first because we weren't sure if we'd have the time to record the more professional 8 track version.

I guess I should have seen it
I know I should have guessed it
and now I have to come to terms

I wish you'd just forgot it
but you would never let it
some things you would not rationalize

it's sad that the bridge has now been burned
it's sad we could not realize
that things could have been otherwise

All through the years we had it
I know through years you felt it
and that is why it's hard to face

Everything we'd done it
between ourselves we'd made it all
so much time had transpired

It's sad all the water couldn't quench this fire
It's sad we could never come to terms
I know we both have these burns

Then the news came to me in latter time
You were gone passed away
Nothing that I could do
They said their prayers
I looked back and I knew
We'd both hoped for better things
We'd both dreamed of better worlds

And now I have to face it
I didn't want to see it
I always thought we'd meet again

And now there's nothing in it
I'm gonna have to make it
I look there's gold beneath the dust

It's sad that we had this thing called pride
It's sad we could never realize
That things could have been otherwise

Then the news came to me in latter time
You were gone passed away
Nothing that I could do
They said their prayers
I looked back and I knew
We'd both hoped for better things
We'd both dreamed of better worlds
