Gold Beneath the Dust
Slightly shorter version with the ending faded a minute sooner.

I remember taking a walk in July or August of 1995, and this song just came to me. I ran home and finished it on the piano. The refrain, "the future is not what it used to be," is something a friend of mine said to me in high school. I was about to leave to spend a year in England. I was thinking that I didn't know what lay ahead, and whatever I thought lay ahead would be different when I got there anyway.

This song actually means more to me now than it did at the time. I like the fact that the song in a way expresses the desire not to be nostalgic, which contrasts a lot of my songs which are overly nostalgic. This is the oldest song that I still play live, and I often end my sets with it to this day.

This was originally released on the Silent Bob album where it ended with over a minute of us jamming out into a long fade. I later put the recording on the Gold Beneath the Dust compilation but faded it out before this long jam to make it shorter.

I'm not where I thought I'd be
I hope that doesn't say too much about me
I thought that I would be farther from here
I'd hoped that I'd have done more
But that's O.K. it really doesn't matter at all
It doesn't really matter much to me

I'm not who I thought I'd be
I'm just stuck here being me
I'm not quite sure now who is to blame
Sometimes things happen, that's all
But it's O.K. it doesn't really come up at all
It's only every now and then that I care

Not looking back
Why should I?
When it seems so clear that
The future is not what it used to be
The future is not what it used to be
The future is not what it used to be

I'm not what I thought I'd be
I used to think there was much more to me
Somewhere back there buried in dust
Lies a vision I lost
But that's O.K. it doesn't really matter at all
It doesn't really matter much to me

I'm not what I used to be
I've new visions for me
Moving farther from an old friend
Who I can barely recall
But that's O.K. it doesn't really come up at all
It's only every now and then that I care

Not looking back
Why should I?
When it seems so clear that
The future is not what it used to be
The future is not what it used to be
The future is not what it used to be
